Dog Breed Files: Lagotto Romagnolo

Lagotto Romagnolo

Lagotto Romagnolo Meaning

Lagotto Romagnolo is a dog breed originating in Italy. The name comes from a combination of meanings; Lagotto is the Italian word for ‘curly coated duck retriever’ and Romagne which is the district in Northern Italy where the breed was developed.

General Info

Not to be confused with a cockapoo, this breed has distinctive ring-shaped curls. They can grow up to 19 inches tall and weigh up to 35 pounds. Their life expectancy is 15-17 years and they are considered a rare breed as there are only 2000-3000 worldwide.

Lagotto Romagnolo

Italian Breed

The Romagne region where the breed was developed was full of marsh land, and so the breed was bred to retrieve ducks on this land. However, when the marshes were drained in the late 19th century, naturally the ducks left the region and so there was no use for the Lagotto Romagnolo breed anymore.

Truffle Searchers

This breed has tuned-in scenting powers, a skill that is now utilised in truffle hunting instead. It is the only pure bred dog in the world recognised as a specialised truffle searcher. They use these skills in various countries where truffles are found, including Italy, specifically Romagna, where the breed originates, where each October a competition is held to find the best dog for truffling.

Lagotto Romagnolo

In the UK

The breed was recognised by the Italian Kennel Club in 1991, and is fairly new to the UK as the breed was first brought over in 1996. The UK is one of the few countries where this breed works as a gundog. This is due to the fact that truffles are not prevalent in the UK.
