Dog Breed Files: All About the Mexican Hairless Dog

Mexican Hairless Dog Breed

Background

The Mexican Hairless dog, also known as Xoloitzcuintli, is the national dog of Mexico. This dog breed is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, with roots dating back 4000 years ago, originating from the Maya and Aztec empires. It is also one of the rarest dog breeds as numbers were drastically decreased by the Mayan and Aztec people, meaning there are only around 30,000 left in the whole world.

Size

As the name suggests, Mexican Hairless dogs are usually completely hairless, making them the ideal pet for those allergic to dogs! There are distinct size types for this dog breed, including toy, miniature, and standard. Toy sized Xolos are usually 10-14 inches tall, whereas standard size Xolos can grow up to 2ft tall.

Name Origin

So what does Xoloitzcuintli mean? The breed name is believed to derive from the Aztec God, Xolotl, God of fire and lightning, as well as ‘itzcuintli’, the Aztec word for dog.

Care

Mexican Hairless dogs are one of the purest breeds of dog in the world, as they originated as a result of natural selection with no human manipulation (one of the only breeds to do so) which is the reason why they are so healthy and intelligent.

In addition to this, Xolos require a thorough skincare routine. As their skin produces skin oils, these dogs can develop acne, so it is important to use a damp cloth to remove dead skin, and moisturise after bathing, as well as wearing canine sunscreen in the sun!

Generally, Xoloitzcuintlis make great watchdogs, need moderate amounts of exercise, and are known for their calm and tranquil temperament.
